Auto Safety Tips
As your insurance agent, we're not just interested in your business; we're interested in you. Safe drivers avoid accidents and pay lower premiums. Here are some basic tips that can help you drive more safely, and save you money.
- Slow down. Most fatal accidents result from excessive speed. Leave earlier, obey speed limits, and drive more slowly in wet or icy weather.
- Don't follow too closely. Rear-end collisions often happen because drivers follow one another too closely. Stay at least two or three seconds behind the driver in front of you, and allow more time at highway speeds.
- Care for your car. Keep tires inflated to their rated pressure. Take time to defog or defrost before you start driving. Change tires, brake pads and wiper blades promptly when needed. The money you spend on maintenance could save you from a costly accident.
- Pay attention. A distracted driver can be just as dangerous as a drunk driver. Restrict cell phone use to necessary calls, and use a hands-free device. No texting while driving! (In Maryland, it's the law!)
- Take care of yourself. Don't drink and drive. If you're drowsy, stop and take a short nap. Be aware of your medications, and check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if you should refrain from driving while using a certain medicine.
- Park safely. Park your car in well-lit, well-traveled areas, to discourage theft. Always lock your car and arm your alarm, if you have one. Take electronic devices (like your GPS) with you. And think twice about leaving your empty dashboard mounts visible. A thief may see the mount and break in to search the car for hidden devices.
